Movist is an open-source video player based on Quicktime and FFMPEG. The application can open pretty much every video format out there, and performs quite well in playing them all, even HD formats like MKV and H.264, among others. Movist is a great player because it is incredibly simple and easy to use. I currently use Movist for my video playback needs over VLC and Boxee because it is just that SIMPLE, and it works great.
The first time that I used Movist was a time when VLC was struggling to play an HD file. So I read that Movist was good at that. And good it is. It played the 1080p file without any stuttering or artifacts, and since then I haven't stopped using it. I placed the Movist icon on my dock, so every time I want to watch a movie or a video, I simply drag it to the icon and the video starts playing automatically.
Movist has all the basic features that you can expect to see in a video player. There is full-screen support, audio and video options, subtitle support, etc.
Movist does have some problems, though. In all my time with it, I noticed that some subtitle formats fail to open. Also, sometimes some files play without audio, when they play fine on VLC.
Those little issues aside, Movist still is my favorite player these days. It is simple and it works great.
