EarthDesk is a very interesting app that puts the world on your displays. It basically can replace your wallpapers with a high-quality image of the Earth. The great thing about this image is that it looks like a current satellite image. It is not real-time imagery, but the image displays the parts of the word where it is currently night by showing a shadow over them. In these areas, you can see lights on, and the more populated areas have more lights, just like a real-time satellite image would display it.
There are quite a few settings that you can play with. First, you can choose whether you want to display the image on all your displays or just your main one. If you have more than 1, you can display it on both, and even apply different settings to each one. By default, EarthDesk shows clouds, and it refreshes the cloud picture every three hours. There is also an option to span the image over several monitors. By default, the image is cloned into all your monitors. You can change the zoom level, the opacity of the clouds and the update frequency from the settings.
All in all, this is a great app that you can use to get a more interesting wallpaper than those pictures of Clown Fish swimming around.
This plug-in allows you to navigate and explore geographic data on a 3D globe.
It can download and combine every map, terrain or satellite tile between two chosen Earth coordinates into one high resolution image.
