ClamXav is a program that keeps your computer virus-free by removing any Windows or Mac threats from your drives.

This application uses the open source ClamAV antivirus engine that can quickly and easily find and erase any malware or malicious threats from your local folders.

Before scanning any folder or drive for viruses, you need to install the aforementioned engine on your computer and download new virus definitions. Afterwards, you can select a directory within your Mac and scan it for malicious or malware threats.

In my testing, I scanned a 6.5GB folder. The program completed the given task under a minute and provided me with a complete report (fortunately, no malware threats were found within the selected directory).

Another good aspect about this antivirus utility is the fact that it can automatically scan defined folders at a certain time of the day. What's more, you can configure the app to update virus definitions list whenever you wish (every day, weekly, on certain days of the week, etc.).

As a conclusion, ClamXav proves to be a reliable solution when it comes to keeping your Mac clean of viruses, malware and malicious threats. The program is simple to handle, provides you with accurate scans, and comes without a price tag.

the editor wrote this "Still, ClamXav can't compare to the other antiviruses, and I don't think it's worth buying it unless you're on a really tight budget" which makes no sense what so ever in relation to the free program that is supposed to be excellent. We've just lost any confidence we had in the web sites opinions and advice.

Apparently it is no longer free. You are downloading a 30-day trial.

This free Mac Antivirus only manages to achieve very poor detection rates. It simply can’t be relied upon to protect your Mac.It also needs to be manually configured to protect the specific parts of your Mac you want shielded and newbies would find this difficult to set up correctly for maximum protection. And even if this was done correctly, it would only provide very poor protection against Mac Malware.
