4Media DVD Ripper Platinum is a commercial DVD ripper for the Mac. It is one of three versions released by 4Media. The most basic version is the "Standard", followed by this, the "Platinum", and the "Ultimate" version, which is the most complete ripper sold by 4Media. In terms of design and format support, all three versions are equal. It is the extra features that set the three siblings apart. The Platinum version is a very good ripper and it has most of the settings that I would use and need. For example, it comes with a video editor that allows me to trim my videos and make new segments out of them. In the main window, each DVD title shows its duration and I can select a different output profile for each one of them. I like the fact that it shows the estimated output size of each title before conversion.
Graphically, the app has a very nice user interface, which is simple and intuitive. There is a video player and a CPU meter and support for lots and lots of different multimedia playback devices. Of course, you can choose which subtitle and audio track you want for your movie. And you do this by selecting it from a drop-down menu.
All in all, this version comes with all the features that I am interested in. It works well, and it looks nice. If you want more features, give the "Ultimate" version a try.
- Good feature set
- Good format support
- Nice interface
- A little expensive
