XBMC is a complete media hub and media player for Mac OS X. XBMC (Xbox Media Center) was a media player that could be installed on the first Xbox to allow you to play pretty much any multimedia formats.

Although development has stopped for the original XBOX, the Mac OS X and Window versions are still up-to-date.

XBMC isn't a regular video player though. It is an application that allows you to index all your movies and songs and keep a good amount of information about them. This makes it easy to find content and to play it. For example, the first thing you need to do when running XBMC is to tell it where your videos are stored. Then, XBMC will detect file names and find the names of the movies automatically. It will also download information about them and artwork, if available.

In terms of performance, XBMC has played every format I have tested it with. It was one of the first multimedia players that I installed on my Mac. It has a very fancy and sharp user interface that looks great on high-definition displays. It has lots and lots of options and features.

I currently don't use XBMC, not because of any faults on the application, but because I find it easier to simply drag a video to the Movist icon on my dock than to open XBMC and look for the file myself. If I had a huge number of movies on my hard drive, I would probably still be using it for movie playback.

Pros

  • It works and looks great
