Satellite Eyes is an automatic wallpaper changer for the Mac. But it is different than most other wallpaper utilities out there.

Instead of downloading a random wallpaper, it connects to Bing Maps and it downloads a satellite image of your current location, and then it uses that as a wallpaper. It is a very original idea and one that works very well when the application is able to determine your location. Satellite Eyes relies on Mac OS X's location services to triangulate your position and if those services don't work right on your location, the application won't work at all. Wi-Fi is needed for your Mac to be able to determine your location.

There are a few options that you can change. You can choose the map style, the zoom level and add an effect to the wallpaper image. There are 10 different map styles and four different zoom levels. The default zoom shows your neighborhood, but you can also choose to see your city, street, or region.

In my testing, I wasn't able to get the application to work at all, mainly because Mac OS X doesn't have the best record in tracking my position. From what I have seen on the developer's website, though, the imagery looks excellent, and I would love this application if it worked.

Pros

  • Very original
  • Good looking images

Cons

  • It relies on Mac OS X's location services too heavily
