MakeMKV is a program that enables Mac users to convert movies from their DVDs, Blu-Rays or local directories to the MKV format.
After you import the movie you wish to convert, the application lets you choose the preferred destination folder. You can find additional output settings in the Preferences menu. For example, the program lets you select the proper DVD structure protection removal method, read buffer size, etc. Some users might find it difficult to configure the aforementioned settings according to their needs if they have minimum video editing knowledge.
The utility immediately converts the imported files, without slowing down your computer.
Personally, I didn't like working with this program. Its interface is unappealing and the application lacks any video editing options (attach subtitles, trim videos, etc.). Furthermore, the application supports a very small amount of input formats (DVDs, Blu-Rays, MKV, and ISO). So, it doesn't offer you support for popular video formats like MP4, AVI, MOV or FLV. Furthermore, you cannot convert multiple videos at the same time.
With that being said, you can find better solutions for converting movies to MKV format and vice versa on your Mac.
Pros
- Reads DVDs and Blu-Rays
- Preserves the quality of the input files
- Fast conversion speed
- Available in various languages
Cons
- Unappealing interface
- Lacks editing options
- Lacks support for batch conversion
