iZip is a simple yet helpful file compression utility that lets you create and extract archive files on your Mac.

This program comes as an alternative to working with Archive Utility (Mac's default app) to manage compressed files and create new ones.

The application was designed to help any Mac user, no matter his or her experience in handling archive files. iZip provides you with an integrated assistant that guides your steps when creating and encrypting a compressed file. The program also offers you easy to configure settings and it can be set as default app for opening archive files.

The main difference between iZip and Archive Utility is the fact that the latter one doesn't offer you any support for extracting the contents of RAR, ZIPX, and 7ZIP files. Another thing that Archive Utility is missing is the ability to encrypt archives.

Still, iZip has its own flaw. This application supports a small amount of archive file formats.

Personally, I prefer not to use any of the aforementioned apps (iZip and Archive Utility). Zipeg is a program I work with on a daily basis that offers me all the features I could possibly require from a compression tool. This app works with plenty of archive file formats, supports partial file extraction, and much more. Anyway, iZip might still prove to be the right tool for many users out there.
