OverSight can monitor your computer’s camera and microphone to detect unauthorized attempts to use them. Thus, it is intended to prevent intrusions on your privacy. The tool is very easy to use, and once you have done the initial settings, you will hardly ever need to interact with the program, except when there is an attempt to activate the camera or microphone.
The program can be set to start automatically and run in the background. From then on, you will be able to access it through the icon on the status menu. Besides, the tool can issue a microphone or camera activation alert containing additional information, such as the identifier of the process making the attempt. Then, you can decide whether you want to authorize it or not. Luckily, you have the possibility of adding specific processes to a sort of white list, so that you will not be bothered again.
To conclude, OverSight provides an easy way to secure your privacy by blocking third-party access to the mic or camera. Unfortunately, the tool is not infallible. Due to the use of user-mode APIs, malware with access in kernel mode may still be able to access the recording devices without being noticed by the product. It is good news, though, that it is absolutely free.
