OmniDiskSweeper is a utility that calculates the amount of disk space occupied by each file and folder on a selected drive and displays the drive's directory sorted by size.

This allows you to identify files or folders that are hogging physical memory and immediately delete them from within the app if you desire.

The program also discerns whether selected files and folders are part of any software package that may be disrupted if they are removed. The text indicating size in memory is displayed in a color that helps relate the size to other files in the system. Scanning of specific subdirectories is supported, as is on-demand updating of selected subdirectories after a scan completes. This selectivity can be useful because the scan can take a while to complete on large drives. Even on a long scan though, it's possible to browse results before the entire scan has completed.

I've been using OmniDiskSweeper as my default disk clean-up tool for some time now, and it hasn't let me down. I like the way it neatly compensates for the Finder's baffling inability to sort folders by size.

Sam's Protip: Selected files and folders can be opened from within the application by double-clicking the icon displayed in the bottom-left corner of the screen - as good as a Reveal in Finder button if the parent directory is selected.

Pros

  • Fastest way to browse directories with an eye on file size
  • Includes hidden files and folders
  • Results of scan can be dealt with before scan is complete

Cons

  • Impossible to undo delete function
  • No fancy visualization options

Have installed an early version to scan 10.6.8, but there appears to be no instructions on how to use this software.
