Mari0 is a very interesting, open-source Mario clone. You can even download the source code and compile it yourself if you want to.

The game looks exactly like the old Mario that we all know, except that there are new game mechanics. Mario now has a Portal gun. Portal introduced these mechanics. Basically, you can shoot your gun into anything and that will become a portal, which you can walk into and exit somewhere else. In Mari0, you shoot portals with the left and right mouse buttons. The left mouse button opens an entry portal and the right one, an exit portal. After both portals have been opened, you simply walk into one and exit through the other one. This is a great way of overcome obstacles and avoid enemies. I used it in the second level of the game, in a part where there was not another way through an obstacle. And it worked like a charm.

Mari0 comes with a level editor that lets you create levels (Worlds) from scratch. It is easy to use and it can produce nice looking levels.

In short, if you have ever played Mario or Portal, you may want to try this game.
