iPodDisk is an open-source tool for downloading music from your iPod. That is all the application does, and it takes a whole different approach from other iPod backup solutions out there.

Instead of providing you with a user interface with which you can find songs and browse them, and even listen to them, in some cases, iPodDisk makes Mac OS X think that your iPod is another removable drive. It actually is, but you can't simply browse it to get the songs that you want. With iPodDisk, you can. When you launch it, a Finder window showing the contents of your iPod will pop-up, and you can browse that window as it if were any other folder on your Mac, you can use quick look to preview your files and even use the search feature built-in with Finder.

This tool is open-source, but it hasn't really been updated for a bit. I run into a problem when I started it. Apparently, Mac OS X 10.6 didn't exist when it was released, so it didn't support it. I went to the "issues" part of this app's Google Code page and found the solution. You have to edit a line of code with TextEdit and the app starts working again. It is inconvenient, but very easy to do.

Pros

  • It is a very nice tool to backup iPods

Cons

  • You have to manually modify a file for it to work on Mac OS X's latest version
