Disk Diet is a system maintenance utility. It can be used to automatically recover hard drive space with a single mouse click. The application deletes a lot of unused data from your internal, external or USB drive. Some of the things that it deletes are the temporary files, unused language files, old logs and caches, your download folder, your mail downloads, and the trash, among others. All of this, you can do on your own, but you can save a lot of time with Disk Diet. The amount of space that you can free depends on how much data is stored in the key locations that this app deletes.
When you launch the application, it may or may not ask you to choose your drive. In my case, I wanted to use the internal hard drive, but I was unable to get it to work. Every time I selected my drive, I was sent back to the main window and the drive wasn't loaded. I tested this on a Mac Mini with OS X Lion. I was also unable to get the app to work with a USB external drive. I tested the application on another Mac, running Snow Leopard, and it worked like a charm.
After a few seconds of scanning your drive, the app will determine how much space can be freed in each category. You will then be asked to click on the "Diet" button to start the process.
On my Snow Leopard Mac, Disk Diet freed 137.8 megabytes, which isn't much, but it can make the difference when you are really short on space.
