Defense zone is an innovative tower defense game for the Mac and other platforms. Tower defense games are one of my favorite games for killing time. They are easy enough that you can play them without concentrating too much, and they can be as long or short as you want. Defense zone innovates in some areas, but in its core, it's a classic tower defense game. The key elements are unchanged. You need to prevent waves of enemies from crossing a pre-established path. To do so, you can build tower weapons to kill them. There are different types of towers, and each tower is good for one type of enemy. Level after level, you will see new enemies and new tower types.
This game has gameplay mechanics that I hadn't seen in games of the genre before. The first feature that caught my eye is Hellfire. This is sort of a power up that towers that have been upgraded at least once have. When activated, weapon loading times are significantly reduced. After Hellfire has fired, it will take some time to load, so you need to use it strategically. Another interesting thing I noticed when playing Defense zone was that the path that enemies have to cross bifurcates. This means that enemies might come from different directions in different waves. Also, after a set number of waves, airplanes make an appearance, which means that you have to keep that in mind too when building your defenses.
Defense zone has a "Lite" version that lets you play the first three levels of the game for free. If you want to continue playing, you will need to buy the full version, for only $4.99.
