Data Recovery Free is a file and photo recovery tool. It is a free application that lets you recover some types of files that were deleted from your computer. Most of the files that you delete from your Mac can be recovered if you use this app or one like it soon after you deleted them. Data Recovery Free can only recover BMP, JPG, PNG, TIF and MP3 files. It will list other file types, but you won't be able to recover them unless you upgrade to a paid version.
The first window that you will see when you launch this app has three buttons on it: File Recovery, Photo Recovery and Lost Partition. The first two modes are almost identical, but they deal with different file types. The last mode helps you recover a partition that has been erased.
I tested the first mode, File Recovery. When you click on the mode that you want to run, the app will ask you what volume or drive you want to scan for deleted files. In my case, I was unable to use my main hard drive. Some apps do this because scanning your main hard drive can result in data loss. So, I scanned an external hard drive. In the first few seconds of the scan, the app found more than 100 hundred files that could be recovered. If the files found belong to the supported file types, you can preview them before recovering them.
In short, other than the fact that I couldn't scan my main hard drive, I think that this app worked quite nicely. It is free, so you can give it a try and see how it works for you.
