CryptoEdit is a very basic text editor with support for document encryption. When you first open this application, you can probably mistake it for TextEdit.

The graphical user interface is very similar and so is the Dock icon. This editor saves files in the RTF, RTFD or TXT format. Documents that use those formats can be imported as well.

As I said above, this editor is quite basic. In fact, there isn't much you can change. You can change the color of the text, the font and typeface (bold, light, etc) used. If you only want to use the application to store the text in a secure manner, then those are all the features that you need.

The security features can be accessed from the toolbar. The first thing that you should do is set a password by clicking on the Password button. Here, you will need to type the password twice for confirmation. You should write it down somewhere else as well, because if you lose it or forget it, you won't be able to access your document. Once a password is set, you can save the document and the application will ask for a password the next time you open it. You can export your documents to the formats listed above, but those files won't be encrypted.

Pros

  • Good format support
  • Encryption

Cons

  • Too basic
  • There isn't much you can change
