Avast! Free Mac Security is a program developed for people who wish to prevent unauthorized users from accessing private data, and protect their computers from any malicious threats. This application provides you with three integrated utilities (Web Shield, Mail Shield, and File Shield) which detect viruses and display instant notifications on your desktop.

You can choose between three scanning methods: Full System Scan, Removable Volumes Scan, and Custom Scan. For each type of scan you have access to an individual set of options and you can select which files and directories to exclude from the scanning process.

In my testing, the application worked OK. One of the two things I don't like about this program is the fact that it might take a while to complete the scanning process.

The other aspect that bothers me is that the app lacks an option to pause and resume the scan.

All in all, I'd say it's worth installing Avast! Free Mac Security on your computer. The application offers many useful features, is very simple to use, and is free of charge.

I want Avast for 10.5; I keep getting the links to download stuff that requires 10.6.

This Mac antivirus has a bad reputation for having many false positives and has been a constant source of problems whenever it was installed on my Mac.

Finally got rid of avast!
