I downloaded Avast Free for Mac and I cannot get it to run. I tried another download of Avast but it shows on my desktop and it doesn't run.

Avast is updated regularly. If the new version does not work well with your old Mac it seems that you need to download another package, older than the one you currently have. Also, make sure that your Mac is updated regularly.
