Timelime is intended for tracking and visualizing your working hours. In this respect, it allows creating tasks and assigning a workload to each of them. Moreover, tasks can be grouped into projects, which lets you know how much time you have spent on these activities.
The application can be set to run unobtrusively from the Menu Bar; still, if you feel that its icon there is using too much space, you can simply hide it via Preferences. Additionally, if you prefer so, the Menu Bar icon can be animated to show that a task is currently being timed. Likewise, the tool responds to hotkey combinations for common operations, like starting and stopping the timer.
Its interface is carefully designed. In this respect, there are three different panes. The first shows the list of tasks, the second displays a calendar while the third allows you to visualize data about your tasks. You will surely notice that there is a small clock icon next to each task. This is where you should click to start or stop timing. Additionally, you can enable idle time detection when there is a period of inactivity. One of the main advantages of Timelime has to do with the possibility of visualizing workload as graphs, using the same colors you have chosen to identify your tasks.
Good news is that backing up your data is possible both manually and automatically. Similarly, you can export data in multiple file formats, such as CSV and XML, and in the case of graphs, you can save them to PDF, PNG and JPG pictures. It is also good that it supports importing Timelime data from XML and TicToc files. Finally, you can also sync your data with other devices by uploading them to your favorite cloud storage service (Dropbox, iCloud or any server supporting WebDAV). In terms of integration, it is a shame, however, that it cannot synchronize with Apple or Google calendars.
All in all, Timelime is perfect for tracking your time, mainly for more accurate billing. Thus, it can come in handy mostly for professionals who are paid for the time spent on projects, such as freelancers and independent contractors. Luckily, there is a trial version available from the developer’s site. Similarly, you can get it freely from the Mac App Store; however, it can be used only for 14 days, and after this trial period, you will need to unlock the full version via in-app purchases.
