MacX Free iMovie Video Converter is a free utility that lets you convert video files so that you can import them into iMovie. As you may know, not every video format is supported by iMovie. As a matter of fact, the number of supported formats is very small, so you often need to convert unsupported files. This video converter can open pretty much any video file and the supported output formats are MOV, MPEG-4, and MP3. The only important format missing here is H.264.
To test the application, I first tried to open an MKV file with iMovie. As I suspected, the operation failed, so I switched to this converter, loaded the MKV file with no problems and I chose the MOV format. The process took less than a minute for a 1-minute file, which isn't too bad. The resulting file played great on iTunes and was accepted by iTunes.
MP3 is also a supported output format, and you can use this converter to rip the audio track off a video file and save it to an MP3 file. This is very useful for music videos or to extract any sound from a video file and then use it on iMovie.
All in all, this free converter works very well. The only bad thing about it is that it doesn't let you edit the video, but I'm sure you can do that on iMovie anyway.
- It works as advertised
- Not slow
- Not a fan of the interface
