iBackup Extract is a utility that allows you to extract data from iTunes' backup files. If you have set up your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to be backed up to your computer, then iTunes will create a backup file the first time that you sync your device and it will add data incrementally to it every time you sync your device.

This application can automatically detect all the backup files present on your Mac, and it can extract notes, messages, voice mails, contacts, calendars, images, call logs, Internet history and even files from those files.

The graphical user interface is quite basic and very easy to navigate. In the top-left corner, you will find a drop-down menu where you can select the backup file that you want to load. Next to this menu, there is information about your device, which includes device type, last back up date and unique device ID. On the pane to the left, the app will list all the types of files that you can transfer. And when you click on one of these categories, the right pane will be populated with all the available files. You can then click on "Copy selection" to transfer the content to your Mac.

In my testing, the application worked quite well. It recognized all the backup files that I had on my Mac and let me transfer content without any problems. The app did take a bit to load files, but not too long.

Pros

  • Easy to navigate
  • It recognized all my backup files
  • It lets you transfer different types of files

Cons

  • Some file lists took a bit to load

Excellent - I used iBackup Extractor to retrieve contacts and SMS from my iPhone backup on my computer after my phone got soaked and wouldn't turn on again. I'd recommend it.
