The good news is that this alarm really works, and as my girlfriend wanted to mess with my highly personal files a bit, it started wailing as if it were being cut with a knife.
The bad news is that it works too well, and every time I forget to switch it off, it starts giving an alarm signal, which could raise the dead, as soon as I touch my Mac.
