Chmox allows you to read CHM files. A tool like this one may come in handy at times because reading Microsoft compiled HTML help files is not readily supported on macOS. Although many users resort to converting CHM files to other formats, such as HTML and PDF, it is good to be able to read them just as they are, without any additional steps.
The tool is very simple and requires no previous experience whatsoever. Chmox opens automatically when you click on a CHM file. Most of the window space is dedicated to viewing the contents of the file. Luckily, you can change the text size as you please. There is a toolbar with just a few buttons, which you can customize by adding other functions, such as Print. On the left side of the window, there is a panel called “Drawer”, which can be used to go straight to different parts of the open document. Besides, the panel can be simply hidden to save some space and help you concentrate on the contents.
It is a shame that Chmox does not really help to navigate through the document. Unfortunately, the links to other pages within the same document did not work when I tried it. Besides, it does allow finding a specific text or creating bookmarks. What is more, it does not have Go Back and Go Forward buttons in the toolbar.
All in all, while Chmox certainly solves a problem, it still needs to be added to some features that ease browsing the files. The product is opensource and, therefore, it can be used at no cost.
