Battlestations: Pacific 1.0

Battlestations: Pacific is a strategy and action game. It was released for the PC and Xbox 360 in May of 2009 and then a version for the Mac was released in October 2010. The Mac version runs incredibly well on my Mac Mini with integrated graphics.

The game lets you relive several battles from the Pacific theater of WWII. You can play as either the United States of America or the Japanese Empire. The American campaign is historically accurate, whereas the Japanese one is an hypothetical scenario in which the Japanese forces defeated the Americans.

You can play this game in two different ways. You can either manage your entire fleet and let the computer take care of the action, or you can control any unit in your fleet. Or you can do a little bit of both, which is the way I like to play this game. There are a ton of different units that you can take control of. There are fighter planes, bombers, submarines, destroyers and even aircraft carriers.

There are a ton of different missions. In some of them, you get to relive famous battles like Midway, Guadalcanal and even Pearl Harbor. Most of the missions focus on destroying specific enemy units, providing support for your forcers, or invading an island somewhere down in the Pacific.

The graphics are quite good and a lot of attention to detail was put into making this game. The cut-scenes look particularly detailed and provide an interesting insight into the story of the game.

The controls are not hard, but there is a learning curve involved. There are many different types of units that you can control, and they all behave differently.

In short, Battlestations: Pacific is a nice game for anyone who has ever taken an interest in strategy games or war itself. Users who want quick action might not like this game, though.
