ACDSee Duplicate Finder is a system utility that lets you scan any folder on your drive for duplicate files, regardless of the format.

By default, the application scans your entire user account, which often includes your photos, movies, documents, music, and other files, but you can really even select an entire hard drive and the application will still scan it. There are a few scanning options available. You can choose whether you want to scan subfolders, to find images only, or to find duplicates only by looking at their filenames. This last option is what most duplicate finders generally do. This one does not only look at filenames, it also looks at file size and even content to determine when two files are duplicates.

During the scan, ACDSee Duplicate Finder tells you how many files are being scanned, but it doesn't tell you how many are left or how long the process will take. This is something that could be improved in future versions. When the scan is done, you will see a list of all the duplicate sets that have been found. You can click on any set to see the duplicate files and take action. At the bottom of the window there are three buttons. One lets you preview the checked files, another lets you open the files in Finder and the last one deletes the checked files.

I have been trying to find a good duplicate finder, and this application has most of the features that I would want in one. The most important aspect of an app of this kind is speed and this one exceeded my expectations. As I wrote above, I would love it if the app would tell you how long the scanning process would take. Filtering options would be also welcomed.

Pros

  • Fast
  • It scans for different types of files
  • Three actions

Cons
