Layers is an application that allows users to capture any area or item from their screens as images. What makes this tool rather unique among other similar utilities is the ability to identify individual components like palettes, menus, icons, windows and snap the output as a PSD graphic format. Layers can capture either the user's screen, window, web browser or a specific application.

Inspector is a Layers' component that makes it easy for users to view all items available for capture. The dynamic display will zoom in on any group of applications you select. The selection may be saved and edited by applying a shadow, frame or making it opaque.

The application includes keyboard shortcut support for capturing the screen, front window, web browser or an application. From the program's Preferences panel, users can define output file name settings with simple drag and drop actions; simply drag items to customize capture file names.

Overall, Layers provides a complete screen capturing solution. The application works for multi-monitor systems, can take a snapshot of single window components and save as layered images. Layers has an intuitive interface, is easily customizable and aimed at both advanced and novice users. Surprisingly enough, it has no function for capturing custom rectangle areas of the screen.
