IPAddressSentinel is a system utility that displays your IP addresses. The app runs on the Menubar, and it displays your IP addresses up there.

It only shows one address on the Menubar, but if you click on it, a menu will come up, and you can see not only your local IP address, but also your external IP address and your DNS name, if you have one. From the menu, you can also click on four buttons that copy those addresses to the clipboard for you, so you can paste them somewhere else easily. There is another interesting feature that monitors your IP addresses over time. When the app detects a change, it can send out an e-mail. This is particularly useful if you are running a server of any kind on your Mac, and you need to be aware of any IP changes instantaneously. Of course, then you would also want to set a DNS name with DyDNS or another free service like that.

In my testing, the app was unable to figure out what my external IP address was. This must be because I am behind a router and a firewall. The only IP address displayed on my Menubar was my home network's.

Pros

  • It is really useful

Cons

  • It didn't find my external IP address
