Exchange Rates is intended to help your calculate currency conversions. Fortunately, in addition to standard currencies, it also supports getting rates for cryptocurrencies and precious metals.

The app is very light and unobtrusive. It runs continuously from the Menu Bar and updates values at a given frequency without your intervention. Although it is very easy to use, the availability of a welcome tutorial is very appreciated.

By clicking on its icon in the Menu Bar, you can get access to the Calculator. It is good that it can store your favorite exchange pairs in the form of tiles. So, all you need to do is pick the desired pair and enter the source figure and you will get an instant conversion.

Notice there is an upper-left corner button giving access to the app’s preferences. In this respect, it is a good idea to take a look at those options. Fortunately, you can create a list of your favorite currencies, including your home currency. Likewise, it is possible to configure notifications you can get from the source-target rate exceeds the set threshold and, luckily, you can create as many notifications as you need to. Moreover, you can pick the desired data sources as well as specify an update frequency. In the case of cryptocurrencies, you are allowed to choose a separate source for each. Finally, you can subscribe to Quandl to know the current values for precious metals.

To conclude, Exchange Rates allows you to not only calculate currency conversions but also receive notifications about convenient (or alarming) exchange rates. There is a trial version available, but it does not use real data for its calculations. Unfortunately, some users have reported problems getting data from Quandl with the full app. Finally, you would perhaps like to know that there is a command-line tool you can download from within the app.
