Duplicate Finder and Remover helps you get rid of duplicate files that reside on your Mac. The app detects all types of redundant files, such as documents, music, videos, and photos. It is capable of scanning any folder and drive on your Mac, including removable drives. In addition, its powerful scan engine analyzes files by content, which makes it possible to find file copies even if they have different names.
To start the search for duplicates, the app uses a simple method that is divided in three stages. The first step consists in adding the folders or drives you want the app to analyze. For that, you can simply drag and drop folders and libraries directly from the Finder. The duration of the scan depends on the drive/folder dimensions; in my case, the app scanned a 13GB folder in a couple of minutes, which was quite fast. Once the scan is over, it will show the number of the duplicates found, if any, as well as the disk space they occupy, and the total number of files scanned.
The scan results are displayed on a list that you can sort as you see fit. With the help of categories/tags and a search tool, you can quickly locate any file on the list. When you select a file, the app will show you all its duplicates, along with details such as file location, creation date, and size. Additionally, with the built-in file viewer, you will be able to preview the contents of the selected file; it lets you preview documents (DOCX, PDF, etc.) and images, and includes a media player to check music and video files. This is extremely useful to review files before removing them for good. In order to simplify the selection of files for removal, the app includes an auto-mark option that will select all duplicates at once. Then, with a single click, it will move the duplicates to the trash.
