CoolTerm is intended to make data transfers between your computer and different hardware pieces connected via serial ports.

Written in Xojo, this serial port terminal app is appreciated mostly by professionals needing to exchange data with such hardware as servo controllers, GPS receivers, microcontrollers and robotic kits.

The tool has the “technical” look that characterizes this type of applications. The interface is quite simple. In this regard, the main screen is composed mainly of a terminal where you get the results of your operations.

Even though the application is quite easy to use, the availability of a detailed user guide is always welcomed. The basic workflow consists in various simple steps. In this respect, you can start by configuring your serial port, which, fortunately, you do not need to do every time as you can save your options. Then, you can connect to a given port and send the desired string via keyboard. It is a shame the tool does not seem to “recall” previous strings, which could save a lot of typing. As soon as the connected hardware sends data, it is shown in the terminal window. Luckily, any string of text can be sent or viewed both in ASCII and hexadecimal formats.

In addition to entering data via keyboard, the tool supports sending text and binary files as well as by pasting text from the clipboard. Similarly, you can easily save the received data to a file in the formats already mentioned.

All in all, CoolTerm certainly provides an easy way to send or receive data from different types of equipment connected to your machine through a serial port. Luckily, this product is absolutely free to use. Donations are encouraged, though.
