Free Data Recovery allows rescuing data lost or corrupted due to such reasons as accidental deletion, virus attacks and power failure. In a wizard-like fashion, the tool takes you through the steps necessary to recover the lost files. Moreover, the results appear similarly to the way files are shown in Windows Manager, so there is little chance you find big problems to use the product.
The tool supports scanning complete drives as well as disk images. Two modes are supported: Standard and Deep. So, if you cannot find what you are looking for using the standard search, there are better chances you can if you use the deep scan. When your results are ready, it is excellent that the tool supports previewing the contents of some types of files, such as documents and pictures. Besides, you can get additional information related to the type, size, creation date and condition of the files. Then, the rest is just picking the desired files and letting the program do its job. Luckily, it is possible to use filters to facilitate the selection.
Depending on the size of the scanned drive, the tool may take some time to find the recoverable files. It is shame that it does not let you search a specific folder only or use preset filters to speed up the scan.
All in all, Free Data Recovery works exactly as described by its developer. It can successfully recover files provided they have not been overwritten. The free tool can retrieve up to 1 gb of data in a session, so if you need to recover more, it is imperative that you purchase a paid edition.
