Wondershare Free Video Converter is designed to help you optimize video files so they can meet your playback needs. Besides converting media files, the app can also edit videos and file metadata, download YouTube files, burn DVDs, compress videos, record your Mac's screen, create GIFs, and transfer files to portable devices. Though impressive considering the multitude of options, the free version of the program isn't great at all since most features come with restrictions.
As a converter, the tool supports most video formats. The files you intend to convert can be loaded from the hard disk or directly from the DVD. The output format can be selected by type of file and by the name of devices or editing apps. The most recently used output profiles are saved automatically into a separate tab for easy access. The conversion module comes with a series of common editing tools that let you customize your video for a better playback experience. Therefore, you can apply special effects and filters, add external subtitles and text or image watermarks, and adjust the volume. The program also provides you with cropping and clipping options - yet, they don't function well, forcing the program to close without a warning.
The download function is very basic. You just copy from YouTube the file's URL, paste it into the program, and wait for the download process to end. With the free version of this program, you can download only from YouTube and only one file at a time. Unfortunately, you can neither set a bandwidth limit nor schedule multiple download sessions. However, the tool can help you with burning DVDs with ease. You can load the files either from computer or from DVD, make a menu with the help of embedded templates, and save the results as DVD files, ISO files, or DVD Folder. With a USB cable, you can transfer the processed files directly to portable devices, keeping your hard disk uncluttered. The Toolbox tab gathers a series of functions you may find useful when working with videos. Therefore, the app can help you fix video metadata, compress videos, record screen, create GIFs, and copy DVDs.
Though the application binds under a modern interface multiple video processing tools, you can't use them much for free because of the restrictions. This way, each file you process bears a watermark, the download is done only from YouTube, and the video recording can't last more than one minute. In addition, the transfer of files to devices, the GIF-making, and the metadata fixing are limited to five files only. What is good though is that you are worn about these restrictions so you can't expect much from the free version.
