I would like to use my old iMac as a Display for my MacBook Pro 16" (M1) via an adapter cable USB-C to TB 2. If so, do I've to install virtualkvm on the iMac only? Thanks in advance for your support.

Yes, it is possible to use your iMac as a display for your MacBook Pro using an adapter cable. However, you will need to install VirtualKVM on both devices in order to use them as a virtual KVM switch.
