Super Refocus is intended for enhancing your photos, mainly to simulate they had been taken with expensive camera lenses. In this respect, the tool allows you to make a given object or person stand out from the background by applying effects such as selective focus, lens blur, motion blur and tilt-shift effects. Luckily, it comes with a tutorial to learn the basic operations.
The application is meant to be easy to use. Its interface shows side-by-side view of the source and the modified photographs. Fortunately, any modification becomes visible in real time, so it is easy to correct any problem. Moreover, it keeps a history of all your actions, which you can revert at any time.
In order to apply the effects, you should use a system of markers that let you draw strokes on the photograph. For instance, the red marker adds focus and depth to the focus object while the blue one allows selecting the background, which then becomes blurry. Likewise, there is rectangle you can use the select the focus area. Additionally, you can adjust the blur and sharpen levels for the part of the photo selected.
All in all, in the hands of a skilled user, Super Refocus can effectively create very realistic results, thanks to the powerful algorithm working “under the hood”. It has the advantage of being easier to use than other similar applications. Still, it has limitations that could make you need other products from its same family. In this respect, it regrettably does not support basic editing features, like cropping, flipping and rotating.
It is a shame the app has not been updated to support the latest macOS versions, Mojave and Catalina. Therefore, it may crash on them.
