This utility was created to help you produce video tutorials or game walkthroughs on your Mac. Screen Movie Recorder doesn't provide you with an actual main screen but it features a Preferences panel where you can configure its settings according to your needs, and a small menu on your status bar.
In the Preferences panel you will find several output settings which are very simple to configure, even to users with little experience in editing movies. You can select the preferred frame rate (frame per second), choose to hide the mouse cursor from the video tutorial, change the destination folder for the recorded clip, etc.
You can start and stop video recording by hitting two combinations of keys (they're listed on the main menu of the app). Once you complete the video capturing process, the application automatically exports the clip to the folder you selected in the Preferences panel.
Personally, I don't think this app is the best solution for creating video tutorials on Macs. First of all, it supports only one output format (MOV) and doesn't provide you with any editing options (some video capturing tools let you trim, crop, watermark, apply effects to recordings). Furthermore, the key combinations for starting and stopping video recordings are difficult to remember and cannot be altered.
But the most important disadvantage is the fact that the program doesn't display a delimitation (area selection border) for the recording area.
With that being said, I think you can find better solutions for recording the screen activity on your Mac.
- Simple to handle
- Lets you select the preferred recording speed (frames per second)
- You can hide the mouse cursor from the recording if necessary
- Supports only one output format (MOV)
- Lacks editing options
- Unable to redefine global hotkeys
- Doesn't display a delimitation (area selection border) for the recording area
