Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary is intended for learners of English who need to use it as a reference source but also increase their vocabulary stock. The app of the same name is based on this popular dictionary, which gives you access to more than 184500 entries. Unlike a standard dictionary, the application comes with multiple learning tools.

The application has a straightforward interface with no hidden features. It helps you find the meaning of words, even if you are not sure of their exact spelling by showing a list of possible words as you type. Likewise, it allows performing wildcard searches and even makes suggestions. Besides, the possibility to make full-text searches is greatly appreciated as it can find the entered string not only from the entry word but also the definitions. Moreover, you are allowed to create instant links between any word you read and its definition entry by simply clicking on it.

Every entry is carefully illustrated to help the learner’s understanding, which includes examples of their use in context, usage notes and images. Similarly, you can even listen to the pronunciation of the selected word in British and American English. Fortunately, unlike many other sources, the words come from actual voice recordings instead of text-to-speech engines.

As said, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary also comes with valuable learning tools. For instance, you can benefit from annotated illustrations by making lists of references. This allows creating personalized lists of words you want to learn, with the possibility of taking quizzes on them. It is excellent news that it also comes with guided activities to help you improve your writing as well as your pronunciation.

All in all, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is a powerful tool in the hands of those interested in learning English as a foreign language. Unfortunately, it does not integrate with the built-in lookup service. There is a demo version you can download freely but it gives you access to only 120 sample entries. If you want more, you can upgrade to a full version via in-app purchases.
