OptimPrefs is an app that lets you easily control some of your Mac's settings. It puts a small bar in the top-right corner of the screen which you can drag around anywhere you want.

This bar has six buttons on it. The first three can toggle Wifi, Bluetooth and your system volume on and off. The other two big buttons let you access your primary and secondary display preferences. The last button opens a preferences window, where you can set the app to start when you turn your Mac on. When you press one of the three buttons, a window will pop up warning you of what has been turned off or on.

I tested this app on Mac OS X Lion, and I was satisfied with the results. I don't have a secondary display, so both display buttons opened the same window. The volume, Wifi and Bluetooth toggles functioned in a proper way.

OptimPrefs can be a time saver for users who need to turn Wifi and Bluetooth on and off. The volume toggle is not very useful since most Mac users can mute their Macs with a keyboard hotkey. The only thing that I don't like about this app is that it can't really be customized, and the number of actions or toggles available isn't really great. Before I ran this app, I thought it would be similar to SBSettings for iOS, but it isn't nearly as good.

Pros

  • All buttons work well
  • Time-saver

Cons

  • Not customizable
  • Not many toggles
