NASNavigator...The term network attached storage (commonly abbreviated as NAS) describes storage devices that can be accessed over a computer network rather than being directly connected to the computer. NAS devices enable multiple computers to share the same storage space at once.
Benefits of NAS
NAS has emerged as a powerful, proven technology for storing data that needs to be shared in the office or the home. NAS devices enable home and business users to easily share large amounts of data in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
A number of factors are making NAS a very popular solution in the home and business:
Convenience. NAS offers a convenient way for users to add storage to all devices in the home or office. By adding a high-capacity NAS to a network, all of the devices in the network are able to simultaneously access and utilize this storage. NAS offers a simple solution to sharing files, music, photos, etc. You can put an entire family's digital photo collection on a NAS, and all family members can access the photos that are located on this centralized device.
Backup. NAS devices are commonly used as backup servers. Rather than buying a USB external backup device for every single device in your home or office, a single NAS can be purchased and all computers on the network can backup to the NAS device. All Buffalo NAS devices include NovaBACKUP® data protection software, delivering a comprehensive backup solution for both business and home. This completely eliminates the need to walk from PC to PC or laptop when you want to backup or restore data. The NAS will be available on each machine as a destination for your backup or source for a restore.
Sharing over the Internet. Buffalo NAS devices have many technologies that make sharing files easier. Buffalo's Web Access technology allows users to share files on the NAS device with anyone connected to the Internet using a Web browser or Apple iPhone™. Buffalo NAS devices also include other sharing technologies such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol).
Multimedia Streaming. Buffalo NAS devices include DLNA multimedia streaming servers. This streaming server allows users to stream multimedia content from the NAS device directly to any DLNA playback device (Televisions, Game Consoles, Set-top boxes, etc.). Additionally, a built-in iTunes® server allows you to centralize the storage of your music files and then access these files from multiple computers.
