Mellel is a word processor purportedly designed for academic and technical users of Mac OS X, but which is just as suitable for other kinds of Mac users (there is no Windows version).
While its price is significantly lower than that of the entire Microsoft Office Suite, it is twice as high as Apple's Pages alternative, and if you take the proportion of the Office Suite that actually consists of a word processor, the price is on par with Microsoft Word. What sets this application apart from the market leader? Not too much. In fact, the interface and features of Mellel are eerily similar to what you find in Word. It seems that pretty much everything you can do with Mellel you can do with Word, and vice versa, making the choice between them more a choice based on interface preference and experience (and maybe a bit of Mac developer pride) rather than features. Since Word is not available as a separate product, Mellel may be of interest to those who want a high-end word processor without the bundled business tools.
Sam's Protip: Buyer beware, as the developers appear to be a small team that does not always make good on its development promises.
