MacX Free DVD to YouTube Converter for Mac is a DVD ripper that lets you convert your movies so that you can upload them to YouTube. The application can convert video to four video formats: MPEG-2, FLV, MPEG-4 and H.264. It also supports conversions to MP3, in this case the video is discarded and only the audio track will be kept.
For a free DVD ripper, this one is quite good. It loads DVD movies from either a disc or a folder on your Mac. It lets you select multiple titles for conversion and, although it doesn't have a video editor, you can trim your DVD titles by entering the start and end times manually. You can select which audio and subtitle track you want to use in your converted files.
The format support is also nice. H.264 and MPEG-4 files can be played on most devices, including iPods, iPads, and iPhones. YouTube will also accept them as input. In fact, there are four different conversion profiles for YouTube. Each one of them uses a different video and audio format, and they vary slightly in terms of quality.
In my testing, I ripped a single DVD title, which I trimmed to a 1-minute clip. I converted it to H.264, and the whole process lasted less than 10 seconds. The resulting file looked every bit as good as the original.
- It works like a charm
- No video editor
- The interface is probably its weakest point
