MacTubes is a free YouTube video browser and downloader. It has a built-in video search engine that connects with YouTube to get you relevant search results. So, finding a video works exactly the same way as if you were on YouTube.com. You simply type a keyword and MacTubes will return a list of matching videos. It will also display a snapshot of the video and some relevant information, like duration, author, views, rating, date, and ID. You can sort your videos by any of these fields. I often do that when I want to find a specific video. For example, I will sort videos by date added to find new videos. Double-clicking a video will open a video player that will play the video in real-time. Most videos can be watched, but those videos that don't support embedding will not work.
You can download any video by clicking on the "Download" button and selecting a quality setting. I tried downloading FLV and HD versions and they both worked fantastically. You can also download videos straight from the result list by right-clicking on them. All the videos that I downloaded played great on VLC. The only thing that I did not like is that you can't play the downloaded videos easily, you have to tell the app to show you where the files were downloaded and you have to play them by yourself. A double-click playback option would be great.
- It works well
- It allows you to download HD videos
- No built-in player for downloaded videos
