iPhone Remote is an excellent app that lets you control your Mac from the distance. This is a completely free, open-source project that has been around for a couple of years.
iPhone Remote is an app that you install on your Mac, and it creates a secure web app that you can access from any browser. By default, you can access the server, when it is running by typing in your IP address on your browser followed by :5010, which is the port that iPhone Remote uses. When you access that from your iPhone or any device, you will see a menu with a few buttons: Applications, Camera, Documents, Files, Remote, Screen, Scripts, Spotlight and Terminal.
If you go into the Applications screen, you will be able to launch any app that is in your Mac's application folder. Camera is obviously intended for taking pictures. The Documents button takes you to the Documents folder and the Files button is a file browser. The rest of the buttons are self-explanatory.
There are two features of this app that were of particular interest to me: Remote feature and Camera. Remote option allows you to control media playback on your Mac; Camera is a great tool when you want to check who's using your computer when you are not at home.
iPhone Remote can be used to stream media to your iPhone or iPad, if the iOS device supports the format.
