GrandPerspective is an application that can graphically show the disk usage of a selected folder, hence contributing to disk management. The files and folders that take up much space can be easily identified by the utility.
Once the utility is open, users can select a folder or a drive that should be scanned. The result will be a tree map: an area that defines the concerned folder, filled with rectangles that represent the included files, each having an area proportional with its size. When scrolling over the rectangles, at the bottom of the main window the name of the files and their size in byte multiples will be displayed. For further information, the side drawer of the main window can be opened. Here, files will be described in terms of file type, date they were created, modified and accessed at and size expressed in bytes. Several color palettes can be chosen for the tree map to be displayed in. Also, files can be color-coded considering one of several criteria: folder, file type, extension, last access, last change and others.
GrandPerspective is a useful application in evaluating the space taken by files out of a folder. The graphical display of space will be appreciated by those who receive information best when transmitted through visual elements. Also, comparing files size-wise can be done more easily using graphics.
