File Helper is a program that comes as an alternative to using the Get Info tool, a built-in Finder utility that gives you access to details regarding files and folders on your Mac.
The utility comes with a straightforward interface where all you need to do is to drag-and-drop the file or folder you wish to analyze over the app's interface. Then, in a matter of moments, the program will give you access to the detailed info you need.
I tested the application by importing a PSD file and a folder containing music files. The directory report didn't offer me much info (only its size and creation and modification dates). However, when I imported the PSD file, the program provided me with a wide range of details, such as size, creation date, its unique identifiers (SHA_1, MD5, etc.), Hex Dump, etc.
What's more, if you load a document, the utility lets you know which app you could use to open the file in question. This feature might prove to be of good use if a file extension isn't familiar to you and wish to learn how to open the file.
Another thing I like is that the program features a menu on your status bar. You can drag-and-drop files and folders over that menu and immediately check their detailed information.
All in all, I think File Helper is a great solution for learning more about the files and folders within your Mac. In addition, you don't have to spend a buck to use it on your computer.
