EncryptIt is a system security tool that lets you encrypt your files. It utilizes the AES-256 encryption algorithm.
The app functions as a drop zone for your files. When you drag and drop a file onto the application, a small dialog will appear asking where you want to save the encrypted file and what name you want to give it. The next step asks you for a password and its confirmation. You can type any password that you want, but the longer the password is, the more secure it will be.
EncryptIt also comes with a password generator. You can slide a bar to increase or decrease the size of the password and there is a copy button that will put the generated password in the clipboard for you to paste somewhere else for safekeeping. It is a good idea to use it, since it can create strong passwords using random combinations of characters. A random password is always better than a combination of words, because word dictionary attacks don't work against them.
I carried out a simple test to see if the application worked like advertised. I encrypted a file and then attempted to decrypt it. The first time I carried out this test, the encryption process worked smoothly, but when I attempted to decrypt the file, the application told me it was "preparing file (ZIP)" and it kept doing that for a few minutes. I closed the app, and re-launched it and the process was completed well this time.
Pros
- Simple interface
- Fast (when it works)
- Password generator
Cons
- It froze a few times during testing
