Free and well supported. Ideal for simple fast input of basic folk and traditional tunes, but capable of much more complicated Muti-part scores if necessary. Many thousands of traditional folk tunes available to download for free on the internet. See Chris Walshaw's website (original developer of 'abc' file format) for much more info:

Includes an "Easyabc' tutorial (with new videos) and LOTS of links to other sites . There is an especially good tune search engine on the site.
I've used Easyabc on a daily basis for more than 10 years now. Note: finding the 64bit version for latest Mac OS's took me a while !
