Duplicate Annihilator for Photos helps you organize your computer’s contents and save storage space by finding duplicate photographs. The application is not difficult to use; however, it could be much easier if there were not so many options. I would suggest to its developers that they should implement wizards to make the tool’s workflow more evident for the common users as well as provide more information using non-technical terms.
The application’s workflow is simple and consists of three main steps: selecting a photo library, scanning and deciding what to do with the results. Additionally, it is possible to visit the Preferences tabs to configure how the scan is performed. In this regard, you can use any of the various search algorithms available or even a combination of them. SHA1 checksum is the default and recommended algorithm. Moreover, you can base your search on such metadata as a filename, dimension, file size as well as EXIF data. Additionally, you can pick one of the detection modes: Magic, Restrictive, Perceptive, or use a customized variant.
The tool works quite fast, but it also depends on your hardware, the size of the library and the search algorithms selected. So, if you need to continue working while the scan is going on, it is a good idea to choose the Slow mode and let the app run in the background. Obviously, it will take longer to produce results, but at the same time it reduces the impact on system resources. When the results are finally ready, the tool marks different versions of the same file with a personalized description.
In general, Duplicate Annihilator for Photos can accurately detect duplicate pictures in your collections, which contributes to making them easier to manage. The tool is OK; however, it cannot detect duplicate files other than pictures. You should know there are tools that support a much wider range of file types, like audio, video and documents. The product is shareware, so you can try it before deciding to buy it.
