Countdown widget is an app that lets you put countdown clocks on your desktop. It is a simple commercial app that you can install directly from the Mac App Store.
You can add new countdown widgets from the Preference window, where you can customize them a bit. For each widget, you can set a color, add a title, and an event date. If you want a countdown, you have to check the "Time Element". All your active widgets will appear on the left pane. You can add new ones by clicking on "New" or remove those that area active. Countdown widget can be set to start at login and you can choose whether or not you want to see a menubar icon.
In my testing, the app worked like advertised. The only problem that I experienced was that when I tried to launch the Preference window from the Menubar icon, it didn't appear on top of my other apps. I had to activate Exposé and find it manually.
