UltraStar Deluxe is a karaoke-style game. Thus, in a sort of competition, players sing along to a given song, while the app awards points based on their performance. In this regard, it can automatically evaluate how well the singer maintains the pitch and tempo of that particular song.
The game can be played in two main modes: Solo and Party. While the Solo mode explains itself, the Party mode is a multiplayer game supporting up to 6 simultaneous contestants. Likewise, you can form duets and even have a tournament by assigning players to teams. Moreover, there is Jukebox mode, which allows you to use the app just to listen to music.
While the players are singing, the application displays song lyrics as well as immediate feedback on their performance, including correct notes and pitch. Luckily, it supports adding multiple microphones and even grabbing the image via webcam. Then, after the singing sessions, it is possible to consult statistics about specific players or teams.
UltraStar Deluxe lets you manage and select your songs. In this regard, it supports up to 5000 songs. There is the possibility of downloading a huge package of Creative Commons songs as well as creating your own karaoke songs from scratch. It is also convenient that a wide range of media formats is supported.
At first, I had a hard time trying to start the game. It was supposed to come with a sample song, but it did not work. Unfortunately, there is no information on how to add new songs. So, I googled my question and found that there is a specific directory to store UltraStar Deluxe´s songs. I also learned that I should create a directory with the name of the song and copy the necessary files to it, which should include the lyrics and the music file. Optionally, you can also put a video or a picture to be used as background there.
All in all, UltraStart Deluxe is certainly a great way to spend some time with your friends if you like to sing. It can manage all the competition automatically so there is no need of (probably biased) judges. It is good to hear that the product is opensource and can be used at no cost.
