TotalSpaces is intented to help you make you the most of the screen space by creating extra desktops. This way, you can avoid cluttering your desktop with too many opened windows. It has been designed to emulate Apple Spaces; however, it comes with some additional features.

The tool is quite discreet as it runs from the Menu Bar without obstructing your normal workflow. Moreover, it can be set to start along with the system. There are multiple options you can access via its icon in the bar. The most important action is switching between spaces, of course. Still, you can do the same thing through keyboard shortcuts. In addition, you can configure the number of rows and columns in the grid, pick a type of display and choose the desired transitions. Likewise, and very important, it is possible to assign installed applications to specific spaces.

Installing this application can get somewhat troublesome, specially because it requires granting permissions and sometimes you even need to disable System Integrity Protection for it to work properly. Yet, this is a one-time-only procedure. I also find some inconvenience when trying to use gestures to move various desktops.

In short, TotalSpaces helps you organize your workspace and, because of that, it can increase your productivity. It is a more than a substitute for Apple’s built-in Spaces and Mission Control, as it is much more configurable. Luckily, there is a trial version you can download from the developer’s site and see if it works for you.
